Home Literacy Practices
I was reading the article about the Johar family and really liked how it talked about all the different literacy practices that can be found in just one home. Although the parents encouraged work book type learning their was also a lot of the kids playing with each other and teaching each other. It mentioned different types of games that they played to help Genna and the smaller children learn different skills. I was reminded that not only the "teacher" in an environment can do the teaching. It is useful and even better to sometimes let the students lead themselves or each other. Genna's siblings helped her with many different types of literacy simply by including her and encouraging her.

I also was very interested in the variety of literacy practices explained in the article about the Johar family household. It was interesting to see that some of the literacy practices that we would probably think as commonly necessary such as reading stories were not valued in this house but yet they made up for that lack of literacy practice through other forms of interactions such as dramatic play. I also absolutely agree with you that students can value from working together and sharing their different knowledges and perspectives with one another just as Genna and Olivia did. As we have talked about in class, allowing students of same or similar cultures to work together can make them more engaged in the classroom instruction and can be of benefit to a teacher that isn't necessarily as familiar with or able to relate to their culture.
